Valletta - culture and history

- The Knights Hospital
The hospital was built in the sixteenth century by the Knights of St John. From the outside it looks like a large warehouse but our Maltese lady guide clearly explained why this was a very special building way ahead of its time.
The large tall ward was divided into bays, each bay contained a four poster bed partly for privacy, it had woollen curtains in the winter and cotton curtains in the summer. The occupants had an en suite toilet with washing facilities, a fresh air vent and sunlight through the high windows.
The courtyard garden provided fresh fruit and vegetables also herbs and spices for medicinal purposes.
Surgical operations were to be avoided but if they became inevitable silver implements were used because they resisted bacteriological contamination.
On the whole a lot of wise healthy practices certainly ahead of its time.
